“Elie Wiesel inspired this piece when I heard him speak at the University of Vermont in 2007. He talked about going wherever a genocide was taking place. He saw his work was to talk to survivors. He said no survivor ever got through their story without crying, so sometimes he felt as if he was ‘traveling around the world collecting tears.’”

“This piece is playfully ambiguous in several ways. The porcelain part is a punch pot gone awry. I held onto it for many years because it was so wonderfully phallic. I chose to make the ruffles because I saw the piece in my minds eye. It made me think of the melding of male and female. I chose to call it Pink Tutu in order for the title not to give anything away. To allow viewers to feel perhaps a little uncomfortable sensing the erotic, but then again… ‘Am I reading something into this hmmm, not really sure, maybe it’s just me.’”

“I had the opportunity to work with an iron mogger. My goal with this piece was to make something quite solid look light and flowing. I built the original out of fabric, clay, and wire cloth. We made the mold using sand and epoxy. I loved the experience of pouring red hot iron, you get to wear a lot of leather.”

“In case you don’t know a hair shirt was used in the Middle Ages. It actually was a vest made of oxhair and was worn as a sort of torture because the hair was so abrasive. My shirt, fashioned as it is as a men’s contemporary shirt was meant for the despicable individuals who knew they were selling worthless bonds and for those who created the loans, though legal, created the housing situation where so many lost their homes.”

“Hair suit is a visual pun on the word hirsute. At 19” tall it is a miniature suit. However it is crafted with the utmost attention to detail, pleats in the pants, even a tiny zipper and even tinier clay buttons. The piece is both funny and a little edgy. I like when my work conveys more than one emotion which is how I experience this world we inhabit.”

“At a yard sale I picked up the original torso which was made from molded cardboard, painted and varnished. I cast the original which I imagine was either a doll or a store mannequin. I was attracted to this torso both because I have a thing about torsos (also ruffles—weird). This torso has that wonderful belly the way kids have. They are built like little tree trunks.”

“When I was a child my mother would sit on my bed at bedtime. She would tell me a story about the Blue Fairy. Her stories were always a variation of the same theme which was; I was being hurt in some way, then the Blue Fairy would arrive and save me. My mother also would take maple seeds, tear them in half, open the seed which was sticky and stick it on her nose. I never see one of these seeds without thinking of my mother who is now 95, in really good heath in both body and mind. These shoes are the shoes of the Blue Fairy. When I show them I fasten them to the ceiling with monofilament so they actually fly.”
