The following is an updated version of Diane Gabriel's statement on her previous website. For additional information, see Diane’s résumé and Burlington City Arts Curator Heather Ferrell’s biography written for the posthumous exhibition of Diane’s work, Pivotal Moments, in 2021.
Diane Gabriel was born and raised in New York City. Classically trained, she attended The Arts Students League in the late 1950s and graduated from Manhattan's High School of Music and Art in the mid-60s. Moving to Vermont in 1970, she received her undergraduate degree from Goddard College. Except for brief times traveling and a residency at The Maine Photographic Workshops, she lived, worked and taught in Vermont until her death in late 2017 at the age of 70.
Gabriel began showing work nationally in 1975. Concurrently she was one of the pioneers of the Artist in The Schools program. She was twice awarded Individual Artist Grants from the Vermont Arts Council, as well as generous fellowships from The Vermont Studio Center. She was one of the founding members of the 215 College Gallery, and in 2002 she became the inaugural recipient of The Barbara Smail Award conferred by Burlington City Arts. Fittingly, Burlington City Arts began conferring a new Diane Gabriel Award in 2021.
Gabriel’s work is held in both private and public collections. For additional information, contact her husband Mark Stoler at mark.stoler@uvm.edu.
